The Boardman Spartan freshman football team opened their 2019 campaign with a 16-6 victory over the Poland Bulldogs. The first half was a defensive struggle as both offenses started off slowly. The second half began with Poland mounting a drive near midfield. But that drive was quickly derailed on a sixty yard pick six by Kejuan Robinson to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead. The two-point conversion was converted by Fernando Ortiz to make the score 8-0. From that point on, Boardman took control of the game with a solid ground attack and a smothering defense. After several three and outs by the Spartan defense, the Boardman offense started to get rolling. The offensive line led by Andre Averette, Tyler Terlesky, Aidan Wittman, Rich Boyarko, and Kyle Barnett began opening holes, and the running attack of Ortiz and Brandon Rotunno led Boardman right down the field. Ortiz tacked on a five yard TD run and again helped the cause by running in the two-point conversion to up the score to 16-0. The Spartan defense took over from there and held Poland on many second half drives. It was led by Andrew Swanson, Caleb French, and Andre Freeman. Alex Micco also helped the cause with an interception. The Spartans are at home again next Thursday (9/12) at 6:00 pm against Erie McDowell. Boardman is now 1-0.
