The Boardman girls’ basketball team dropped a hard fought game to the Struthers Wildcats by a score of 42-31. The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-2 lead midway through the first quarter before the Spartans went on a 7-2 run to close the quarter and get back into the game. Boardman outscored Struthers in the second quarter to only be down 3 at intermission. In the second half, Struthers pushed the lead out to as many as 13 before Boardman made one last push cutting it to 7 midway through the fourth quarter. Later, free throws by the Wildcats put the game away and the Spartans dropped to 4-7 on the campaign. Leading the way for the girls was Raegan Burkey who poured in a game high 13 points. She also led the team in steals with 6. Katie Stamp chipped in with 8 points and was an impressive 4-5 from the free throw line. Katelyn Sawyer hit for 4 points, while Cate Green and Alicia Saxton each netted 3 points. Annaliisa Cordova, Ashley Saxton and Emma Tokarsky were key contributors off the bench to help play great defense and hold the Wildcats well below their season average in points. The girls return to action next Wednesday and will be looking for more offense at Austintown Fitch.
