Mars-The Boardman Boys Track Team captured the 2021 Mars Invitational Championship after a dominating performance this past Friday despite wind, cold, and rain in Western Pennsylvania.
The Spartans began the scoring with junior Trey DePietro placing first overall in the 110H in a time of 15.83 seconds. Next, junior Ben Alvarico placed second and classmate Cameron Thompson fourth overall in the 100 meter dash in times of 11.35 and 11.54 respectively. The Spartan 4×100 relay team of Alvarico, Cameron Thompson, senior Dawaylon Pritchard, and junior Anthony Hightower placed second in a time of 45.34 seconds. Senior Cristian Ortiz placed third in the 400 meter with a time of 53.21 seconds. Sophomore Logan Thompson and DePietro placed first and third in the 300H in times of 41.59 and 42.94. Senior Frank Bero placed third in the 800 in a time of 2:03. Alvarico and Cameron Thompson placed second and fourth in the 200 in times of 23.05 and 23.59 seconds. The Spartan 4×400 relay team of Bero, Ortiz, DePietro, and Logan Thompson was first at 3:33.
The field events saw Hightower place fourth in the high jump. Senior Sam Cammack was second in the pole vault and classmate Ted Anzevino was fourth. Senior Jonah Bacho was third in the shot put with senior James Jama in fifth. Bacho placed fourth in the discus.
“The weather was rough, but our guys fought through it and brought a team championship back to Boardman,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips.
The ‘Meet MVP’ Award went to DePietro for his first place finishes in the 110H and 4×400, as well as his third place finish in the 300H, and to Cameron Thompson for his second place finish in the 4×100 and two fourth place finishes in the 100 and 200 dashes.
“Both Trey and Cam have been solid performers for us all season,” Phillips explained, “they quietly do their job, and they lead by example.”
