Boardman Glenwood 7th Grade Maroon Volleyball Team dropped a close match to AMS Blue on Monday Evening 2-1. Gia Triveri led the scoring serving 15 pts. followed by Cami Goske with 14 serving pts. The Spartans host AMS Red on Wednesday Evening.

Game Recap

Boardman finished the regular season with a 6-8-2 record after a final win at Spartan Stadium over Warren G. Harding.

After a scoreless first half, Senior captain Sean Buck hit net from 30 yards out to give the Spartans the lead. Junior captain Alexander Wood put the game away for BHS with his goal in the 76th minute.

Assists came from Junior Dom Barber and Senior Jacob Smotzer while Senior Jeffrey Holmes had 5 saves for Boardman.

Cameron Thompson and Carter Mraz each had 30 yard touchdown receptions from Jason Triveri. Sean O’Horo led the team in receiving with 45 yards. Triveri threw for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns. Anthony Hightower scored on a 5 yard run. Marcel Tomlin led the team in rushing with 30 yards. Luke Ryan kicked 3 extra points.

Carter Mraz had an interception for a touchdown while Anthony Hightower and Guy Young each had an interception. David Coss blocked a punt that was recovered by Raymond Cmil. Alex Liindeman, Christian Odom and Tristen Hutchko each a sack. Cmil, Blaine Strines, Stephen Conti and O’Horo led the team in tackles.

Meet Recap

The Boardman Girls XC team traveled to Willoughby to compete in the 10th Annual Andrews Osborne Academy Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Spartans were led by junior Sophia McGee and senior Casey Zaitzew. Sophia won the race at a blistering time of 19:34, which was a career best time for her. Casey Zaitzew was runner-up and ran the course at 19:36. Freshman, Alayna Cuevas placed 15th overall with a time of 20:43. Julia Gorby placed 19th overall with a personal best time of 20:54. Bailey Moore placed 23rd at 21:33, junior, Hannah Ryan placed 26th at 21:51 and finishing out the scoring for the 3rd place Spartans was Macy Potts at 21:53 placing her 27th.
The Lady Spartans JV team also placed 3rd overall. Leading the Spartans were Hannah Davitt 22:56, Gina Gabrielle 23:17, Allyson Schwendamen 23:19, Jordan Solmen 23:26, Isabelle Dwyer 24:04. Finishing out the scoring for the Lady Spartans was Alannah Hetzel 24:45 and Emily Olexa 25:22.

The Boardman Glenwood Junior High School Cross Country Teams competed in the Mahoning Valley Junior High Cross Country Championships at McDonald’s Woodland Park on Tuesday. The boys team placed 5th, and the girls placed 7th. The top 7 runners scoring for the boys team were Ben Alvarico, Ben Zilavy, Josh Zilavy, Trey DePietro, Brady DePietro, Ryne Loftus, and Jack Dascenzo. The top 7 runners scoring for the girls team were Lauren Bero, Lexi Mihok, Ali White, Kathleen Sullivan, Adrianna Quinlan, Kaitlin Hagan, and Genevieve Quinlan.

Game Recap

The Spartans defeated the Raiders from Warren Harding 28-21 to run their season record to 4-3 and stay ranked 7th in Region 7. Boardman scored in the first quarter on a 1 yard run by Domonhic Jennings. Tommy Fryda converted the point after the touchdown. The Spartans were up 7-6 after one quarter. In the second quarter, quarterback Michael O’Horo scored on a 2 yard run, Fryda converted the PAT again and the Spartans were up 14-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, O’Horo scored on a 12 yard run, Fryda converted again and now the lead was 21-6 in the third quarter. Harding came back to score towards the end of the third to make the score 21-13. In the fourth quarter with a little over 5 minutes to go in the game, Harding scored and the score was tied 21-21. With 33 seconds to go in the game, O’Horo scored on a 1 yard run, Fryda covered the PAT and the Spartans pulled out the win 28-21.

Jennings led the Boardman rushing attack with 154 yards on 27 carries. O’Horo rushed 22 times gaining 97 yards. Maurice Pickard and Noah Falletti caught 2 passes each. The Spartans defense stopped a drive by the Raiders late in the game before they regained possession for the final drive. The Spartans take on the Irsuline Irish on Thursday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. at YSU.

After a scoreless first half, Canyon GlenOak took an early 1-0 lead about 5 minutes into the second half. This lasted until about 15 minutes remaining when Junior Alexander Wood assisted Sophomore Tommy Fryda’s 6th goal of the season to tie the match. The Eagles, however, were able to score late off a corner kick for the win.

Boardman High School’s Boys Soccer Team enjoyed their annual Senior Night with a 4-1 win over the visiting Ursuline Irish.

Ursuline’s 1-0 lead lasted less than a minute as Sophomore Brian Yauger found the net for his first goal of the season off an assist from Junior Dom Barber. Junior Trevor Boggess then put the Spartans ahead just before halftime with a masterful display of ballwork and finish.

Sophomore Tommy Fryda and Senior Mazin Musleh each added a goal in the second half along with assists from Boggess and fellow Junior Alexander Wood. Senior Jeffrey Holmes had 5 saves as Boardman outshot the Irish 25-6 on the evening.

The Spartans 7 senior players include:
Sean Buck, Brandon Chamberlain, Adam Eleyan, Gavin Harris, Jeffrey Holmes, Mazin Musleh and Jacob Smotzer.

BHS will close the regular season on Thursday when they host Warren Harding at 6:00 pm at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans won the JV match 5-0 with goals coming from Freshmen CJ Cordon, Aidan Corbley and Spencer Smith along with Sophomores Steven Balentine and Michael Flood. Smith and Sophomore Chris Barber split time in the nets as keepers with Barber preserving the shutout by blocking a penalty kick.

The BHS Varsity volleyball team finished their regular season by defeating Lakeview in straight sets to improve to 18-4 overall and 10-4 in the AAC. Leaders for the Spartans were Kaylin Burkey with 17 kills, 10 digs, 2 aces and one block, Ashley Clark with 27 digs, 6 kills and 3 aces, Katie Stamp with 7 kills and 2 aces, Maria Torres with 5 blocks, 4 kills and 4 aces, and Raegan Burkey with 33 assists, 12 digs, 2 kills and one block.

They open up tournament action next Tuesday against Austintown Fitch. The match will be at 8 PM at Lake High School in Uniontown.
