The BHS varsity volleyball team advanced in the district tournament by defeating Uniontown Lake High School in 5 sets. Leaders for the Spartans were Kaylin Burkey with 14 kills and 5 aces, Krista Johnson with 18 digs and 11 kills, Katie Platt with 39 assists and 27 digs, Courtney Platt with 19 digs, and Hayley Eicher with 10 kills. Their record improves to 20-4 on the season and they will play Massillon Jackson on Tuesday at 7:30 PM at Lake High School.

The BHS varsity volleyball team opened up tournament play by sweeping Massillon Washington in three straight sets. Leaders for BHS were Kaylin Burkey with 12 kills, Krista Johnson with 4 aces and 7 digs, Haley Blangero with 5 kills and 2 blocks, and Katie Platt with 26 assists and 7 digs. The Spartans are now 19-4 overall and will play Uniontown Lake at Lake High School at 6:00 PM Thursday.

Leaders for Washington were Meghan Manson with 14 assists, Jessica Monroe with 8 kills and 2 blocks, and Sam Hackenbracht with 15 digs.

Game Recap

The Spartans lost a hard fought battle against Youngstown Ursuline at YSU stadium by a score of 23-21. The Spartans scored first on a 13 yard pass from quarterback J.R. Ryan to his wide receiver Travis Koontz. Adam Deeley made the one point conversion and the Spartans were up 7-0 six minutes into the game. Ursuline scored a field goal with 3 seconds left before halftime to make the score 7-3 going into the locker rooms. In the third quarter Ursuline went up 10-7 but the Spartans came back scoring 14 points to put them up 21-10 going into the fourth quarter. Koontz caught a 10 yard pass from Ryan for one score and senior Alex Duda caught a pass from Ryan and ran for 77 yards for the other. Deeley completed both conversion points after the two touchdowns. In the fourth quarter, the Irish scored a touchdown with 20 seconds left on the clock and the Irish securing the win. The Spartans will play home to Austintown Fitch on Friday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m. The Spartans are now 4-4 on the season.

The BHS varsity volleyball team defeated Girard in 3 straight sets. Leaders for the Spartans were Hayley Eicher with 9 kills and 1 block, Katie Platt with 30 assists, 7 digs, 4 kills and 3 aces, Krista Johnson with 8 kills and 8 digs, and Courtney Platt with 18 digs. They finish the regular season with a record of 18-4 overall and 11-3 in the AAC.

Leaders for Girard were Makayla Trebella with 7 kills, 8 digs, and 1 ace, Megan Payich with 9 digs and 6 service points and Sydney Teter with 2 blocks. They finish their season with an overall record of 11-11 and 6-8 in the AAC.

The BHS JV team also defeated Girard 25-19, 25-12.

Meet Recap

On Wednesday the Glenwood Boys and Girls Cross Country teams competed in the Mahoning Valley Junior High Championship at McDonald’s Woodland Park. The BGMS Boys team placed 4th and the top seven runners were Noah Basista (13th), Matt DunLany (27th), Tommy Fryda (28th), CJ Cordon (30th), Jake Hughes (35th), Siman Mascola (36th), and Jaden Rivera (49th). The BGMS Girls team placed 7th and the top seven runners for the BGMS girls were Alyssa DiNapoli (34th), Abby Yocum (39th), Emily Olexa (39th), Hannah Davitt (41st), Mary Brown (51st), Jill Rivera (52nd), and Rylie Grantonic (53rd). This completed a successful and highly competitive season for the cross country teams.

The BHS volleyball team swept Lakeside in 3 straight sets as they celebrated Senior Night Tuesday. Leaders for the Spartans were Krista Johnson with 14 kills, 8 digs and 3 aces, Katie Platt with 22 assists, 5 aces and 4 kills, and Courtney Platt with 10 digs and 2 aces. This brings their record to 17-4 overall and 10-3 in the AAC.

Leaders for Lakeside were Rylee Cole with 12 digs and Aaliyah Hunt with 7 kills.

The BHS JV team also defeated Lakeside by the scores of 25-21 and 25-18.

The Lady Spartans will travel to Girard on Thursday to finish up their regular season.
