Yesterday was a big day for the Lady Spartans’ basketball team. Boardman rolled into Austintown Fitch looking to extend a 3-game winning streak and complete a regular-season sweep of the Falcons. Also, ahead of the contest, senior Raegan Burkey was a mere 7 points away from reaching 1000 career points. Burkey got to work early, knocking down a 3-pointer in Boardman’s first possession of the game to take a 3-2 lead. The Falcons briefly regained the lead, but a 3-point play by Katie Stamp put the Spartans back up 6-4. Burkey’s next points came on a layup off of a fast-break dish by Mackenzie Riccitelli to stretch the lead to 8-4. The Falcons would score one more time before the Spartans would go on an 8-0 run and find their rhythm. Boardman stayed in control and maintained their lead for the remainder of the contest.
At the end of the first, Burkey connected on a pull-up jumper off of another dish by Riccitelli to hit her 1000-point milestone. With this accomplishment, Burkey joins a prestigious group of only 16 other Spartans, 11 of which were a part of the girls basketball program. Burkey would go on to record a double-double with 10 rebounds and a game-high 10 points. Congratulations to Raegan on hitting this impressive mark!
Boardman’s defense completely shut Fitch down in the second, allowing only 2 points in the entire quarter. The Spartans headed into the locker room at halftime leading 35-11. The Spartans’ offense hit a bit of a lull in the third, as the Falcons outscored them by a slim margin of 8-6. Boardman’s dominant first half ensured that they still had a comfortable lead despite a slow quarter. The Spartans got back on track in the fourth and played hard until the final buzzer, winning by a final score of 53-29. This victory improves the girls’ season record to 7-11 and their conference record to 3-3. Alongside Burkey were 7 other scorers. Emma Mills and Katie Stamp each poured in 9. Stamp also pulled down 13 rebounds, putting her just short of a double-double. Mackenzie Riccitelli netted 7 and handed out 7 assists. Gia Triveri scored 6, Bella Martin added 4, Ally Fleming had 3, Sam Duble knocked down an early shot for 2 and Reagan Smith rounded out the scoring with 1. Boardman will close out their regular season Monday as they host conference rival Canfield.
