Boys Varsity Football · Maple Heights Defeats Spartan Football Team In First Round Playoff Game


The Spartans football team played undefeated Maple Heights in the first round of the OHSAA Playoff’s in Division II, Region 5 on Friday, November 2.  The Spartans scored first on a safety with 7:52 left in the first quarter.  Alex Huzicka and Tina Arcuri made the tackle on the quarterback and the Spartans were up 2-0.  With 5:12 left in the first quarter, Mike O’Horo scored on a 3 yard run and Tommy Fryda converted the PAT to put the Spartans up 9-0.  Maple Heights scored just before the first quarter ended and the score was 9-6 in favor of the Spartans.

In the second quarter, Maple Heights struck first with a touchdown, but Tommy Fryda converted on a 27 yard field goal to make the score.  Heights scored again before halftime to make the score 22-12 in favor of the Mustangs.

In the second half, Maple Heights scored 20 more points and the final score was 42-12.  Senior Joe Ieraci was the leading rusher for the Spartans running for 148 yards on 29 carries.  Senior quarterback Michael O’Horo competed 7 passes out of 14 attempts for 57 years.  Junior Connor Miller was the leading Spartan receiver on the night catching 3 passes for 36 yards.

The Spartans end the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 6-5.  This was the second consecutive year in a row the Spartans have qualified to the State playoffs.
